Online card spending on the rise, survey shows

UK consumers spent as much as £3,370 online in the last year, according to a new survey of 2,000 online shoppers.

Some 40 per cent of consumers shop online at least four times a month, the research found, with ten per cent of these saying in an average month, they purchased products online ten or more times.

What’s more, the survey confirmed that almost 60 per cent of consumers shop online up to three times a month.

The research also gave a more detailed breakdown of consumer spending, with the survey showing that men are more prolific shoppers online, spending an average of £3,495.00 a year; women, by contrast, spent £3,120.00.

Reflecting on these results, Gabriel Hopkins, Head of e-commerce products at WorldPay, said, “Every day we hear reports consumer spending is under pressure, but e-commerce continues to grow at a healthy rate. Men are renowned for avoiding shops, but they’re enthusiastic e-shoppers. Men typically spend the most online except in the areas of fashion and clothing where women are power shoppers, spending almost twice as much.”

Indeed, the results of the research suggest that while online spending is becoming increasingly commonplace in the UK, there is room for further progression in the coming months and years.

Consumers are clearly more comfortable with the idea of making website payments and advances in technology should help to accelerate this unstoppable transition.

In July, figures from the Office for National Statistics showed that the online retail revolution is already underway.

Data confirmed that UK shoppers spent an average of £586.9 million each week in June, which is equivalent to a year-on-year increase of 18.3 per cent.

Website payments accounted for 9.7 per cent of all spending, excluding fuel, in July. And the latest report from the WorldPay eCommerce shows that this trend has continued in the subsequent months.
