The popularity of this new payment service has seen it become a top buzz word of the year.
Whether you’re in Cupertino or Camden, contactless is the phrase on everyone’s lips, so much so in fact, that it has been named as one of the Oxford Dictionary’s words of the year.
Contactless missed out on being crowned word of the year to the highly popular ‘vape’; the act of inhaling and exhaling the vapour produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device.
After a pretty tepid launch, with both retailers and consumers reluctant to start using contactless payments, 2014 saw the touch-and-go term making headlines locally and globally, thanks mainly to the likes of TfL and Apple.
The capital’s transport network was the perfect testing ground for contactless tech; millions of people making low value payments at high speeds and with over 12 million contactless journeys recorded since launch, it’s safe to say it’s been a huge success with commuters.
Apple, of course, launched its highly anticipated Apple Pay service back in October. This cardless payment system is built into the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models, making it quicker and easier than ever before to pay for your Starbucks while half awake!
