25% of all searches conducted on mobile devicesData Insights 6 June 2014
Is your business set up for smartphone searching?
As you might expect, considering the soaring number of smartphones in use globally, it is becoming increasingly common for searches to be conducted on mobile devices.
This obviously has a significant impact for those with online retail businesses and it should be a priority to ensure your website displays and functions effectively on such devices.
However, there are a number of consequences of the rise in mobile search, many of which have been highlighted in this Infographic from HeyStaks.
One-quarter of all global searches are now conducted on mobile devices, while 59 per cent of smartphone owners say they regularly use these to search for products or services online.
With the vast majority of these devices now containing GPS technology, users can specifically seek out stores or restaurants close to their physical location. As a result, it is important the address and contact details feature prominently on a website for any business also operating out of a bricks-and-mortar premises, while Google Places will help to ensure this information boosts your local search ranking.
As of December 2013, just over a third (34.2 per cent) of all paid search clicks came from mobile devices. The infographic shows this is expected to rise to 42 per cent by December of this year and 50 per cent by December 2015. This indicates the importance of ensuring your website is mobile-optimised, particularly if you are planning to utilise paid search advertising.
HeyStaks also highlights the fact 50 per cent of mobile searches are driven by an intent to shop locally, compared to just 20 per cent of those conducted on a desktop. Indeed, more than three-quarters (78 per cent) of mobile searches result in an offline purchase – 55 per cent of which occur within one hour of the initial query.
However, half of those searching fail to find what they are looking for, so businesses are missing out on potentially lucrative revenues as a result. To combat this, it is vital retailers ensure they have a site that displays and functions on a mobile device and are engaging in tactics that will help to boost their local search rankings.
